As Lunar New Year is coming up on Feb 8, it may be a good idea to order a Mandarin dress that will flatter your figure. Don't worry about receiving it too late! Lunar New Year is a 15-day celebration, and Chinatown parades usually take place toward the end of it. You still have about two weeks.

See how well my velvet Mandarin dress goes with a beret and over-the-knee boots? It's easy to put together a chic outfit with a modernized Mandarin dress, which wouldn't look too ethnic for any occasion.

Don't you love this black velvet scalloped dress trimmed with hot pink ribbon? While it has the slimming effect of black, the hot pink accents make it vibrant enough for Lunar New Year's celebration. You can have it custom made through http://www.efushop.com/ by emailing [email protected] to inquire about it.

In case a modernized Mandarin dress is still a bit too ethnic for you, below is an even more modern one, without frog buttons (the photo will remain a hot link to the outlet of Neiman Marcus as long as the product is available).

If you like a little ethnic flair, then go for a Mandarin dress with fancy buttons by all means! When these buttons are arranged diagonally, they actually have a slimming effect, which diagonal lines always produce.

When it's still cold, a floral Mandarin dress will bring spring to you early. I would choose a large floral print in soft colors so it won't look too loud, but the big flowers will make us look thinner by contrast. A floral print on a black background will be especially slenderizing.

If you are pear-shaped, look for a slight A line, which will be hip friendly.

You probably know red is the theme color of Chinese New Year, but I'm not presenting all-red dresses here. It's because I think an all red dress is too strong of a statement, which doesn't work for most occasions. Wearing pink (even just pink accents like those on my black velvet dress) or a floral print with red will be cheerful enough for Chinese New Year.

Speaking of red floral prints, nothing can compare with red roses! Did you know that Dolce & Gabbana made them the it print of this season? A rose print item from winter sales of Dolce & Gabbana would be ideal for Valentine's Day! That's the topic of my next post. See you next week!

Note: I'm launching this week's post early because I'll be too busy in the next two days. For those of you who didn't already know, I normally publish my weekly blog every Wednesday or Thursday.
